On Thursday January 29th Dr. Recycle visited our class with an amazing assortment of creations he made out or recycled materials.Children took part in making a whirlygig and a fishing pole. Special thanks to our two parent helpers- Liam's mom and Isabella's mom. Here is Division 9 on PJ Day.
We spend a portion of our week reading various versions of The Gingerbread Boy.
We finished the week by decorating gingerbread cookies. We haven't had a January snowfall but that didn't stop us from thinking about cold, icy places. Children did a great job of making 3-D penguins from plasticine. We spent a portion of the week learning about art elements with the focus on line. Children participated in "blind" contour line drawing of a pear. "Blind" means they looked at the pear and didn't look at their pencil as it moved across their paper. It takes focus and patience. We discussed the changes that occur with the passage of time. They compared their appearance as well as things they did when they were very young as compared to the things they can do now.
We began 2015 making New Years' Resolutions that we hope we can keep. Below are a couple of examples. There is a group of cubs that like to practise and perform Reader's Theatre presentations for our class as well as touring the school performing for other classes as well. We have begun reading the ten selections for picture book of the year. After reading the story children will be ranking each selection from 1-5. We'll let you know the winner sometime in April. Below are Division 9's first 7 year olds! On Friday the 16th three members of the B.C. Lions came to our school and taught us ways to conserve energy at school and at home.
December went by in the blink of an eye. The cubs in Division 9 kicked off the holiday season with a visit to The Langley Centennial Museum to experience a pioneer Christmas.
It was a short but busy week for cubs in Division 9. Children discussed the reasons for reading (for pleasure and to acquire information). They sorted books from Scholastic Book order forms into fiction and non-fiction books they might like to read. Their selections are on display in the hallway outside of our classroom. Many children are eagerly awaiting our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. We had the COWS ON WHEELS Dairy presentation on Wednesday. Children enjoyed learning about Dairy farming. On Friday afternoon Janet Crockford visited our classroom. She presented an interactive session with students to identify the different seasonal activities of local Aboriginal people of the past. Students made their own medicine wheel representing the four colours of the seasons. A THANK YOU goes out to Mrs Nunes, Mrs. English and Ms. Lennie for assisting us with the making of our medicine wheels. Busy at work.
I enjoyed meeting so many parents at our Parent/Teacher conferences this past week. I understand the reason the children in Division 9 are so great! This past week children said good-bye to the Hallowe'en season by bringing in treats from their haul. We used them for a variety of math activities. We sorted, weighed and graphed with them. We also discussed the meaning of PEACE and CONFLICT. We discussed ways we could avoid conflict and create peace in our classroom. Here are a few of their ideas. Have a great week!
It was another busy week here in Division 9. Pictured below are some of the Hallowe'en happenings children engaged in this week. HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Children playing card games to reinforce math skills. C.H won the class draw for the Chinese Lantern plant. Congrats! Playing 20 Questions about Hallowe'en symbols with our Grade 4/5 Buddy class. It was pumpkin mania in Division 9 this past week. We integrated pumpkins into many curricular areas. We estimated the circumference of our class pumpkin then graphed the results. We spent a wet Wednesday at the Aldor Acres pumpkin patch. In spite of the weather, children and adults had a great time. Children came back and wrote about their experience at the farm. They closely examined their pumpkin and sketched a picture with their pumpkin's unique characteristics. We compared the needs of pumpkins with our own and discovered shared needs as well as how our needs exceed those of a pumpkin. When children take their pumpkins home don't be surprised if they want to take a bath with it to watch their pumpkin float. Enjoy your weekend.
Below are pictures of children engaged in activities of their choice (Free choice time). Some children choose to construct with blocks or straws and connectors. Others choose to engage in art, writing, drama, reading or explore nature (A.T.can be seen examining our rock and mineral collection) during this time. They may choose to work, play, explore independently, in pairs or small groups. We read the story The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything and discussed things we are afraid of. I am afraid of carnival rides that turn me upside down. I am afraid that I will fall out even though everyone who takes the ride comes off safely. Below is a sample of their responses.
We wrote about things and people we are thankful for. We created a story board for the story Farmer Goff and His Turkey Sam. D.A. on our first class sharing day on Monday.
Division 9 was busy learning the routines for our daily silent reading time. At present, children are striving to engage in 15 minutes of silent reading. Eventually they will add 10-15 minutes of Buddy reading to this time. The girls in photo three are Buddy reading using the application Quick Voice on the iPad to record their efforts. Children enjoy listening to themselves read. This helps them gauge their fluency and expression.
The last photo shows them listening to Ms. Hall share a story about ground rules for behaviour during technology lessons. Children receive technology instruction from Ms. Hall twice a week. (Mrs. Williams is learning new things in technology almost daily!) Thank you, Ms.Hall, we are lucky to have you! Well, the first week of this school year is in the books. I enjoyed working with my new group of cubs. Your children are amazing! I have some traditions in our class. We celebrate the end of each week with Lollipop Friday. To promote collaboration and cooperation children work in groups to earn points. At the end of each day the group or groups that have earned the most points will receive a trip to the Treasure Box.
The beginning of each day often sets the tone. I enjoy greeting children at the door with a smile and a comment. If you have something to tell me or ask me please do so at a time other than at the door in the mornings. You can always email me as well. Children need to have a pair of runners which serve as indoor shoes as well as a pair of outdoor shoes or boots. Children spend recess times outside rain or shine. I also have a request that children who wear shoes with laces be able to tie them independently. Thank you. Enjoy your weekend! I look forward to meeting you. Respectfully, Laurie Williams |
